Candidates Forum
San Diego City Council, District 1
Barbara Bry vs. Joe LaCava –– plus One Paseo update
The struggle over the outrageous One Paseo proposal brought into sharp relief the importance of the San Diego City Council in shaping our regional quality of life, whether we live and vote in San Diego or not.
Of special importance is the First District, which includes La Jolla, Carmel Valley, and Del Mar Hills, Heights, and Terrace. Democratic incumbent Sherri Lightner is termed out. Republicans are hoping to flip District 1 and thus win a 5-4 majority on the city council. High stakes indeed!
At our June 11 meeting, the last before our summer break, we will meet the two leading Democratic candidates in this pivotal race. Both live in La Jolla. Barbara Bry is an entrepreneur, a columnist for the U-T, and a founder of Run Women Run, a non-partisan organization that encourages pro-choice women to run for public office. Joe LaCava is a land use and public policy consultant, president of the La Jolla Community Planning Association and chair of the San Diego Community Planners Committee. He circulated the petition that blocked approval of One Paseo.
Also: Attorney Dwight Worden, who serves on the Del Mar City Council, will discuss the history, the future, and the politics of One Paseo and Carmel Valley. Dwight, Joe, and Barbara all spoke at the pivotal May 21 hearing at which the council voted unanimously to rescind their earlier approval of One Paseo.
RSF Democrats meet on second Thursdays. Save the date. We follow important regional races and invite good speakers. Our core program lasts about one hour, with time to socialize before and after. At least one-third of program time is reserved for Q&A. All North County welcome.
